Introducing Content Pre-Checks and Discover Filtering for Fortnite Islands

Jul 16, 2025

The Fortnite Team

Today, we’re introducing content pre-checks to help improve the publishing process and Discover Filtering to increase originality in Fortnite islands’ promotional content.

Here’s how the two new features work:

Content Pre-Checks: Fix Issues Before You Publish

Content pre-checks give creators advance notice about possible rule violations or similarity issues, helping you quickly identify and fix issues ahead of content review.

From now on, when you prepare a release for publishing, our automated system will check your promotional content (e.g. title, thumbnail and lobby background images) to verify that it complies with Fortnite Island Creator Rule 1.13 Keep It Authentic. We plan to expand the checks to cover additional rules in the future. If the system detects a potential issue, you’ll receive a warning message. You can still continue with your submission, but your island may fail comprehensive moderation.

The automated system will also check your title and thumbnail to make sure they aren’t identical (or near-identical) to something another creator has already published in our ecosystem. In this case, your island will be blocked from publishing until you update the promotional content. Content that is very similar to another island’s promotional assets will receive a warning and may have limited visibility in Discover, but you are welcome to proceed with content review.

Check out the FAQ below before publishing your next island or updating an existing one.

Discover Filtering: Encouraging Greater Variety in the Fortnite Ecosystem

Discover Filtering removes islands from top rows in Discover if creators don’t address pre-check warnings related to originality, which we hope will incentivize creators to use unique titles and thumbnails for their islands.

Islands filtered from Discover will not appear in:
  • Homebar-feeding rows (Trending, People Love, Fan Favorites)
  • For You / Personalization
  • New & Updated Content Testing rows
Filtered islands will still appear in search results via exact island code and all other rows, including Recently Played, Library, Favorites, and Creator Pages.

FAQs

Do content pre-checks apply to new releases of existing islands?
Yes, starting now, all new releases will go through pre-checks.

How will I know if my island is filtered from Discover?
During the island publishing process, your thumbnail and title will be checked for similarity to existing content:
  • If your thumbnail or title is found to be identical or near identical to another island, you’ll see a notification and won’t be able to publish without updating your metadata.
  • If they are very similar, you’ll receive a warning that your island may be filtered from top rows in Discover.
My thumbnail or title has been flagged and I’m unable to publish my island or have been filtered from Discover – what are my options?
Update your title, thumbnail, and background image, then re-submit for review.

I want to publish a new version of an island with an original title/thumbnail I have created. Will I be blocked or filtered from Discover?
No. If you or your team are the original creators of the content that matches or nearly matches an existing island, you will not receive a content pre-check warning. You won’t be blocked from publishing or filtered from Discover. In other words, creators of original content are able to publish titles and thumbnails that are highly similar to their existing islands.

There are existing islands with very similar thumbnails and titles. Can those be updated without being blocked or filtered?
  • Thumbnails: only the island that was historically first to publish the thumbnail can update it without being blocked or filtered from Discover.
  • Titles: only the island with the most unique users in the last 96 hours will be able to update the title without being blocked or filtered.
How is the original creator identified?
The original creator is determined using the following criteria:
  • Thumbnails: The creator or team that first published the thumbnail in the Fortnite ecosystem.
  • Titles: The creator or team who published an island that either had 100 unique users in the last 96 hours, or accumulated at least 150 minutes of editing time on the project in the last 30 days.
