Creators can now add proximity chat to their islands! Proximity chat is a new feature for in-game voice channels in Creative/UEFN islands that enables players to communicate when they’re near each other in a game.
Add proximity chat to bring a variety of new social interactions to your islands. For example, squads can more easily communicate and strategize in co-operative shooters, players can form alliances or agree to go their separate ways in RPGs, teams can collaboratively solve challenges in escape rooms and puzzle games, and so much more.
Proximity chat is set to off by default. To enable proximity chat on your island, navigate to the Island Settings under Voice Chat. You’ll be able to control the full volume range and the distance over which the volume gradually drops to zero.
When proximity chat is enabled in your island, a mandatory HUD element is displayed that shows players who are actively speaking. Voice reporting, muting, and blocking all work in conjunction with the feature, and Epic will moderate proximity chat reports to address any violation of our Community Rules.
Proximity chat is currently available as Early Access. Early Access means we’re giving you an opportunity to try out a feature that’s still under development. By releasing a feature as Early Access, our aim is to put something new and exciting in your hands as soon as the core functionality can be used effectively. We’ll be reviewing your feedback and improving the feature for the final release in the coming months.

For example, if a parent/guardian has disabled Voice Chat for their child’s account, their child won't be able to speak with or hear other players using the proximity chat feature. Or if a parent/guardian has set their child’s voice chat settings to “Friends Only,” their child will only be able to speak with or hear other players from their Epic friends list and platform friends list.
Parents/guardians can adjust their child’s voice chat settings inside Fortnite or by signing into their child’s account using the Epic Account Portal.

For Players and Parents
Creators can now choose to enable proximity chat on creator-made islands. Players’ existing voice chat settings will not change as a result of this update — proximity chat respects the settings of the player or the player’s parent/guardian if Parental Controls are enabled.
