New Narrative, Role-Playing and Chat Features for Creators
The Fortnite Team
Looking to add narrative and role-playing elements to your Fortnite islands? Now you have even more options! We’ve recently introduced a range of new features and devices in UEFN that can help you to build story-driven games and role-playing experiences.
The Stat Management devices and Skilled Interaction device can be used in tandem to implement RPG-style mechanics, like skill-based fishing, where players gain experience and unlock gameplay changes as their skills improve.
Using the new Conversation device, you can enhance your narrative by creating dialogue trees, enabling players to interact with vendors, NPCs, or other interactive elements.
Plus, text chat is now available to all Fortnite islands. Combined with proximity chat, it offers flexible communication options to boost role-playing, teamwork, and social gameplay on your islands.
Let’s take a closer look at these fun new features!
The Stat Creator Device allows you to create custom statistics for players, teams, or matches, similar to existing stats like Eliminations, Assists, or Score. These custom stats can be displayed on the heads-up display (HUD) or used as conditions for the Scoreboard at the end of a match or to determine win conditions. You can define stat levels to implement level-based systems and gameplay, enabling players progression within your islands.
The Stat Counter Device tracks the current stat value for a player or group and triggers events when the value changes or reaches set thresholds. It works with both custom stats and existing game stats. Additionally, the Stat Powerup Device can instantly add or remove a stat value or do so repeatedly over time. This functionality can be applied to both custom stats and existing game stats.
Triggered by any game logic, the device presents the players with a UI where they must input buttons with precise timing. The default UI can be replaced with a custom UI in UEFN.
To get started, explore the new Conversation Device template island in UEFN. You'll learn how to use the Conversation Editor – a custom tool for crafting dialogue in your projects - alongside asset creation and options to customize the conversation menu styles. Visit “Conversations in UEFN” for device documentation, workflows, and tutorials on building custom conversations.
In addition to voice chat, you can now customize text chat settings for your island’s Game Channel, choosing to enable text chat for all players, limit it to teammates only, or disable it entirely. By default, your island’s text chat settings align with your voice chat settings, and you can customize them in the Island Settings under Text Chat. These new chat options open up exciting opportunities for role-playing and enhance player coordination. Learn more in our Introducing a New Text Chat Experience in Fortnite blog.
In addition, proximity chat lets players talk with those nearby, adding depth to interactions. Together, these features provide multiple ways for players to connect, fostering teamwork and enhancing social gameplay. Text reporting, muting, and blocking all work in conjunction with both text and proximity chat. Epic will moderate text reports to address any violation of our Community Rules.
