Verse Stand-Up Template: Learn to Make Your Own Comedy Show in Fortnite!
The Fortnite Team
Ever want to fill a room with laughter? Fortnite v28.20 introduces the Verse Stand-Up template for UEFN that shows how to create your own comedy show in Fortnite!
v28.20’s Chair device enables you to seat players and focus their view on a specific area, while the Input Trigger device drives gameplay or triggerable actions in your game based on player inputs. These new devices, combined with MetaHuman Animator, are the perfect ingredients for creating your own comedy show.
The Verse Stand-Up template demonstrates how to use the Character device to bring Fortnite NPCs (“Characters”) to life in your world. Use this template to learn how to design your own show, or repurpose the showcased features to develop other linear content experiences.
Stand-Up takes advantage of the recently expanded selection of Fortnite Characters available to creators as well the Chair device and Input Trigger device. Let’s take a closer look at what functionality these devices enable.
First up, the Chair device. Available in both Fortnite Creative and UEFN, this device enables you to put players into a seated position in order to focus their view on a specific area. You can even customize the chair design.
When it comes to the design, select from a list of presets, create a custom chair based on your own imported static mesh, or choose to hide the chair completely. The Preview Character Mesh option will give you a sense of how players look when seated.
The Input Trigger device, also available in Fortnite Creative and UEFN, enables a player’s inputs to drive other gameplay or triggerable actions in the world (such as blowing up a barrel). Player inputs that can be used to fire device events include Fire, Aim, Crouch, Jump, Sprint, Interact, Alternate Interact, Move Forward, Move Backward, Move Left, Move Right, and Spot.
(To define which gameplay or actions you’d like to trigger based on the player’s input, use the Verse programming language or direct event binding in the Details panel.)
When a player is seated watching a show in the Verse Stand-Up template, they’re prompted to change the camera via the Input Trigger device. There are six cameras the player can choose from.
When you’re using the Character device, NPC Spawner device, or any other device that can spawn Fortnite Characters to play custom animation sequences in UEFN — such as in Sequencer — you can apply facial animation to the Characters using MetaHuman Animator.
MetaHuman Animator enables the creation of high-quality facial animation in minutes from video captured using an iPhone or stereo camera without needing to do any manual animation.
This process requires an iPhone 12 or newer and Unreal Engine 5 running on a PC. Once you’ve created the animation in Unreal Engine, simply export it to UEFN by following the process in our documentation. You can also explore more tutorials, like those for using MetaHuman Animator in Unreal Engine and capturing performances.
The facial animation in the Verse Stand-Up template was created using this workflow. Please note that this workflow only works with Fortnite Characters, not custom characters created with the NPC Spawner device.
As always, we can’t wait to see what you do with these new tools. Find the Verse Stand-Up template in the Feature Examples section of UEFN. To learn how the template was made, check out our Verse Stand-Up template tutorial. You can also jump into the playable Verse Stand-Up experience, JokeNite Produced by Trevor Noah, today using island code 6296-7829-6524. Time to laugh it up!
